My decision to pursue a career in the medical profession was partially influenced by my family -- particularly by my mother who worked as an MD/PhD pathologist while in China. When our family immigrated to the United States, my mother initially got a job at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston as a research scientist. She later went on to do her pathology residency at the same academic institution, and now she works at Houston Methodist Hospital as a surgical pathology fellow.While I was growing up, my mother took every opportunity she could to communicate her extensive medical knowledge to me, and because of her influence, my goal is to become a doctor who is hardworking, motivated, and keeps patients' needs in the forefront of my mind. I was admitted to Baylor University in 2011, and my hard work throughout high school meant that I began my post-secondary career with a Baylor Gold Scholarship and a Jones Scholarship from Houston Jones Scholars. The program I enrolled for was a B.S. in Biology honors program on the pre-med track, with a minor in music.Since starting my junior year, I have served as an undergraduate tutor, a position I was granted on account of my strong academic performance in subjects such as chemistry, physics, and biology. In fact, I was selected from a candidate field of hundreds of students, and the competitive process included an extensive interview by staff at the tutoring center. With my skills, experience, and patience, I'm able to communicate complex topics to students.In my spare time, I enjoy music, volunteering, and working out.
